BIOBLITZ - URBAN FOREST

BioBlitz is a world citizen science event that brings together scientific professionals and students seeking to document and disseminate the biodiversity of a specific area in a short period of time.

On November 9th, 2019, Rio de Janeiro received its first BioBlitz, a realization of Projeto Mantis in partnership with Jaquelini Luber, with funding from the National Geographic Society and support from Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden.

BioBlitz - Urban Forest  joined 37 scientists and educators and 51 high school students to document,  in a single day,  as many species as possible, including plants, insects, birds, mammals and other beings.

Our edition, Urban Forest, called  the attention of participants and the public to the vast diversity of plants and animals that exist in the center of one of Brazil's largest cities.

BOTANICAL GARDEN OF RIO DE JANEIRO

Bioblitz - Urban Forest was held in the arboretum of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, a true open-air laboratory connected to one of the largest urban forests in the world, the Tijuca National Park.

Founded in 1808, the Botanical Garden is today one of the most renowned research institutions in Brazil. In addition to being a postcard of Rio de Janeiro and the beautiful landscapes, it has a huge diversity of wildlife, among trees of the live collection and animals that find refuge in the middle of the city.

Using the iNaturalist app, we documented biodiversity, seeking to identify as many species as possible. The researchers shared information about the life they found and how the work of recording and identifying species in each area, from fauna to flora, is a rich experience for students who are passionate about nature.

iNaturalist platform is a global network of biodiversity records, where people from anywhere in the world upload photographs of living beings, while other members of the community help in the identification of species. With an application available for free for smartphones, iNaturalist became a tool that allows any citizen to contribute to the knowledge of our planet's biodiversity. With support from National Geographic, iNaturalist now has a growing community of nature enthusiasts, students, researchers and people passionate about nature. To participate, simply download the app on the link above, create your account and go in search of your wild neighbors!
